U5-U19 – Youth Recreational Soccer

Our Recreational Program is available for whoever wants to play; there are no tryouts or prerequisites. Registration will continue as long as there is space available on a team for your child and coaches can be secured. You are encouraged to register as early as possible. At the younger ages we try to place children from the same school together on teams so that they will know their teammates and see them on a regular basis. We try to keep players together on the same team each year. In the upper age groups, as our number of players starts to decline, we try to keep the number of players balanced across teams to make them all competitive. As the children get older, the number of players on a team increases as they begin playing on larger fields and play longer games.

Team/Friend Requests

  • We do our best to honor all requests. You can indicate your requests during registration. We do NOT honor requests for practices days, times, or locations. We roster over 2,000 players. We allow our volunteer coaches to choose their practice days/times/locations.
  • Please register on time. We may not be able to accommodate your requests if you register late.

This matrix indicates the age group in which your child will play. Children are not permitted to play in an age group lower than what is indicated by their birth year.

Early Bird Pricing from April 1st-April 30th!

April 1st-30th:

  • U5-U8: $155 (Savings of $25!) – uniform purchased separately.
  • U9-U19: $165 (Savings of $25!) – uniform purchased separately.

Regular Pricing

May 1st-May 31st:

  • U5-U8: $180 – uniform purchased separately.
  • U9-U19: $190 – uniform purchased separately.

Late Pricing & Registration

June 1st – until registration closes:

Space is limited. Registration will remain open through the summer, however, age groups will fill and registrants will be placed on the wait list.

  • U5-U8: $205 (extra $25) -uniform purchased separately.
  • U9-U19: $215 (extra $25) – uniform purchased separately.

During the late registration period, placement on a team is not guaranteed, but you are only charged once team placement is finalized.

2023 Season Details

  • You will be contacted by your coach in late July with your team’s information.
  • Practices for the Recreation program will start the 1st week of August as long as your child has been placed on a team with a coach that has been cleared with the necessary background check and safety training. Practices will continue through the last full week of October. There are no practices in November.
  • Practices are two nights a week on either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday on various fields at parks and schools in Folsom (based on the coach’s preference). Practice days, times, and locations cannot be selected by parents/players or guaranteed by the Club.
  • Practice times adjust throughout the season due to reduced sunlight. Practice duration times for younger age teams (ie: U5-U8) may be shortened even further due to the younger age (i.e. 40-45 minutes each) at coaches’ discretion.
  • Parents/Guardians are required to attend all practices & games for U5-U10 teams (not just drop and go).
  • Practice times:
  • Each team will play up to 10 Saturday games starting around mid-August through mid-November. However, it is common for a game or two to be cancelled due to poor air quality or weather conditions. Cancelled games are not rescheduled.
  • U5-U8 games are played within Folsom. A pre-season Jamboree for the U5-U8 teams will be Sat. Aug. 12th and optional for teams to take part in. The first games for this age group will take place on Sat. Aug. 19th.
  • U9-U14 games are played within Folsom and near-by communities – Rancho Cordova, Fair Oaks, and the Carmichael area. A seeding tournament for the U9-U14 teams will be Sat. Aug. TBD.
  • U15-U19 games are played in the NorCal Super Rec League at various locations in Folsom and Northern California.
  • Game schedules are typically released in mid August and October depending on your age group.
  • Team and player pictures will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7th, 2023. We do not provide make-ups for team pictures. A date for individual picture make-ups will be provided after Oct. 7th.
  • Teams will experience one or two BYE weeks off for holiday and reseeding (except for U15-U19 teams as noted above).
  • Practices and/or games may be cancelled because of excessive heat.
  • Practices and/or games may be curtailed or cancelled because poor air quality.
  • Folsom Lake Surf cancels all sanctioned activities when the local Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeds 150.

Do you have a first time soccer player? Folsom Lake Surf is a great place to begin! We have lots of info on this page but here are a few common questions.

Q. How old does my child have to be to play soccer with Folsom Lake Surf?

A. Your child must turn 4 years old by December 31, 2023. There are no exceptions.

Q. After I register, when will I hear from the Coach?

A. You will hear from your Coach by late July.

Q. When do practices start?

A. Practices can begin August 1st.

Q. How long is the season?

A. Our Recreational Soccer program runs from early August through early November. There are typically about 10 games in a season for each team in U5 through U19.

Q. How long are the games?

A. The game duration varies with the age group. The following table provides more information regarding the length of game play. Note: the half-time break is not included.

Q. We are a busy family with two working parents. Can I choose my practice days/times?

A. No. We roster over 2000 players each season and we cannot accept requests for practice days/times. We allow our volunteer coaches to choose their practice schedules. We unfortunately can not accommodate days of the week requests.

Q. Can I request friends to be on my child’s team?

A. Yes, there is a section on the registration form for friend requests. Please understand this is a request, not a guarantee. All requests must be the same birth year as your child you are requesting.

Q. Can I get a refund if the practices do not work with our schedule?

A. Yes. You can email the registrar and ask for a refund, however, there is an admin fee that is withheld as our club pays the league for every player that is registered. Please see section on refunds for the schedule and more info.

Q. Can I change teams if the time slot/schedule does not work out?

A. We encourage parents to contact the Coach before reaching out to the registrar. There is limited movement possible after the formation of the teams.

Q. Can we play for a team for which we are not assigned?

A. No.

Q. What happens with my child’s registration for Folsom Lake Surf Recreation program, if my child makes a Folsom Lake Surf competitive team during May tryouts?

A. If your child makes a Surf competitive team (U7-U19), we will either reimburse or apply 100% of the rec registration to the comp registration/tuition. If your child leaves the club for another competitive program, our normal refund policy would apply. All requests must be submitted in writing to our Club Services Manager via email to dineen@folsomlakesurf.org; this is not automatically applied.

Q. Can I play with a team outside of my birth year?

A. Folsom Lake Surf does not allow player play-ups. As a way for teams to be able to stay together year after year, all players must play within their specific birth year. Teams will likely play against teams of mixed ages (2 birth year teams) when they play against other clubs.

Q. Can you tell me anything else about your club?

A. Our mission is to positively impact our community by providing the game of soccer to youths of all ages and playing abilities. We strive to create an environment that inspires a love for the game and that enables the full potential of our youth in skill development, personal growth, and leadership. We are active members in our community and recognize a responsibility to make contributions through our service, our programs, and civic partnerships.

I would like to coach my child’s team!

Folsom Lake Surf has coaching opportunities. If you wish to coach for Folsom Lake Surf, please register here. We will provide you with more information about our program. You do not need any special qualifications or experience to coach a recreational team. Folsom Lake Surf holds a coaching clinic before the season begins, typically at the end of July. The coaching clinic will teach you how to coach a youth soccer team, offer suggestions for practice drills, and suggest techniques that you may use for your own practices.

Info on Uniforms and Equipment

Folsom Lake Surf strives to project an image of the community. The uniform plays an integral part in forging the club’s identity and pride in the organization. This can only be accomplished if all Folsom Lake Surf teams wear the designated club uniform so that no matter what age group, no matter what occasion, the team can be readily identified as representing the Folsom Lake Surf.

All items of the uniform kit must be in the designated colors. Any variance of color cannot be worn or used at any event in which the player or team is representing Folsom Lake Surf.

  • All players must have one Nike White Jersey and one Nike Royal Blue Jersey
  • Each player must wear Nike Black Shorts and Nike Black Socks
  • Each player must wear shin guards
  • Soccer cleats are encouraged for better traction

The home team wears Royal Blue Jersey and the away team wears White Jersey.

Folsom Lake Surf Recreational Uniforms can be ordered from the ordering invitation sent by email. If you ordered a uniform last year you can request a 50% refund on the cost of this years uniform. Last day to make this request is Friday, July 21st.Contact Dineen with any issues

You will need to order your uniforms immediately after the announcement to insure on-time arrival. Orders will be fulfilled and shipped directly to you.

The cost of uniforms is not included in the registration fee. The cost of uniforms is approx. $75.00 to $125.00 including tax & shipping. The cost will be determined based on individual orders. All players are required to purchase a Royal Blue jersey and a White jersey. (you will not be required to purchase jerseys annually)

Do you need to cancel your registration?

Folsom Lake Surf Recreational 2023 refund policy

All refund requests must be submitted in writing to our Club Services Manager via email to dineen@folsomlakesurf.org or mailed to Folsom Soccer Club, P.O. Box 821, Folsom CA 95763-0821.

Refund requests for a recreation soccer player will be based on the following:

  • Requests received prior to May 15th – full refund minus a $25.00 fee
  • Requests received May 16th – July 31st will receive a 50% refund

There will be no refunds for recreation soccer players beginning August 1 unless we are unable to place your child on a team or the season is canceled.

Please note:

  • If your child’s roster is released after July 24th, and you would like to request a refund, your refund request must be received within one week from when the roster is released to receive a 50% refund. If the request is received after one week from when the roster is released, a refund will not be processed.
  • If your player registers for the Recreational program but then chooses to participate in the Competitive program in May, your Recreational registration will be applied to the Competitive registration fees.
