What is TOPSoccer?
TOPSoccer is a community-based play, training and team placement program for young athletes with special needs (abilities). It is run by local volunteers and designed to meet the needs of children with physical and/or other special needs. The program targets those kids ages 4 and up who would like to play soccer, but are challenged by the traditional soccer environment, including those kids with physical supports and wheelchairs.
The program is geared towards player development rather than to competition.
What is Folsom currently doing about it?
We will be hosting four TOPSoccer Play Days a year. Play Days are free events open to all children with special needs to come out and have fun learning to play soccer. Players will be taught soccer skills in small group settings or stations, and will be cheered on and assisted as needed by a “Buddy.” Each Skill Station will be led by a registered FSC Coach and will feature soccer skills modifiable to each individual player’s interest and ability level. Following the Skill Stations, players will be organized into teams and will be able to practice their new skills in an informal scrimmage game, again with the assistance of Coaches, Buddies, licensed Referees, and of course cheering family members and friends!
What does the future of TOPSoccer in Folsom look like?
Our plan is to continue to host four Play Days spaced throughout each year to build soccer skills and an interest in the game for our Players in a fun, positive, non-competitive environment. We would also like to add a six week TOPSoccer league for any interested Players in the Fall of 2016. More information on this league will follow as we work out the details!
